Flood: Man, Wife, 2 Children Die In Boat Accident.



ENUGU—A family of four got drowned
yesterday while on their way to a refugee
camp at Iggah, Enugu State, after their
house at Odeke community in Kogi State was
submerged in flood.
This came on a day chairman of Uzo-Uwani
Local Government Area of Enugu State, Mr.
Cornel Onwubuya, presented relief materials
worth about N5 million to Kogi State flood
victims who fled their state and are currently
camping in communities within Enugu State.
Sources said the victims, including a man, his
wife and two childdren, were sailing in a
wooden canoe when the goats they were
taking along in the boat began to disturb the
movement of the boat and in an attempt to
calm the goats down, the boat capsized and
all the occupants drowned in the flood.
It was also learnt yesterday that a woman
delivered a baby in a boat while fleeing the
flood at Ibaji community, while another gave
birth at Iggah refugee camp shortly after
arriving the camp.
The nursing mothers are said to be in dire of
need of medical attention which is lacking in
the area just as the aid agencies which could
have provided such assistance are yet to
arrive at the camps.
The materials donated to the refugees at the
three camps yesterday by the local
government included 100 bags of rice,4 bags
of beans, drugs, 500 mosquito treated nets,
100 bags of toilet rolls , 20 gallons of 25 kg
groundnut oil, 75 torch-lights with batteries,
cartoons of disinfectants, bags of onions ,
cartons of maggi cubes, 30 bags of salt,
cartons of bathing and washing soaps, mats
and blankets, trailer load of sachet water,
bottled water, among other essential items.
Onwubuya, while making the donation,
appealed to the federal government to also
come to the aid of the victims, adding that
the local government council was in touch
with the Kogi State government and its
Enugu State counterpart in respect of the
plight of the victims.
