White House asks YouTube to 'review' inflammatory anti-Muslim video...RT
The Obama administration has urged YouTube to “review” the suitability of the anti-Muslim film that has sparked anti-American protests throughout the Arab world, in a late attempt to defuse controversy.
“It is in response to a video, a film, that we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting,” said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.
“That in no way justifies any violent reaction to it, but this is not a case of protest directed at the United States writ large or at US policy. This is in response to a video that is offensive … to Muslims.”
The statement represents a turnaround from the administration as it comes to terms with the scale of protests the film has unleashed.
Just a day earlier, on Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also condemned the video, insisting that it should be allowed to be broadcast in defense of the principle of freedom of expression.
Ironically titled "The Innocence of Muslims," the 14-minute video, conceived by an American-Egyptian Coptic Christian, has been stated as a reason for attacks on US and other Western embassies and missions in over twenty Muslim countries.
YouTube has not responded to the White House's request, but had previously refused to take down the video, only selectively blocking access to it in the Middle East.
“This video — which is widely available on the web — is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries,” said an earlier statement from the company, which is owned by Google. YouTube later added other countries with large Muslim populations to the blocked list.
The low-budget production, which sat on YouTube for months with only a handful of views, mocks Islam and presents the prophet Mohammed as a pedophile. Various uploads of the film following its dub to Arabic and broadcast on Egyptian television have generated several million views.
Some countries, such as India and Pakistan, took proactive steps and requested that YouTube block the video.
Afghanistan has stopped access to YouTube in its entirety until the video portal removes "The Innocence of Muslims."
The film was initially uploaded in July, but did not cause controversy until it was dissected on conservative Egyptian programs earlier this month.

The Military Have No Competence To Dialogue With Boko Haram, Says Chief Of Defence Staff
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Oluseyi Petinrin, has pointed out that the Armed Forces have no competence to dialogue with the Boko Haram sect.
Speaking in Maiduguri, Borno State, which is the principal enclave of Boko Haram, he said that the armed forces are trained for purposes related to absolute protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territory.
“It is the federal government who has people who can talk, who can sit at the table and deliberate, we are not trained for that,” Air Chief Marshall Petinrin said. “Federal government is federal government; they own everybody and everything, if they decide to dialogue they can dialogue, but what I am saying is that as far as the security forces are concerned, ours is to ensure there is peace, nobody has told us to dialogue with anybody and we work based on order. We are not trained to conduct dialogue as soldiers.”
He further noted the complexities of terrorism, saying of terrorism and issues of criminality, “Once people get it introduced to the society, the society continues to be on the guard, it is like armed robbery, after the civil war, armed robbery started in the country and till now it is still with us.
Nevertheless, he warned the Boko Haram sect that they cannot triumph in their insurgency, and urged them to be better citizens and demand change by forming their own political party.
He urged Nigerians to be vigilant and for everyone to play his part in the quest for stability.
“What is now required is that everyone should be aware of their environment and continue to monitor their surrounding so that no one comes to destabilize their environment, it is a continuous thing and all of us should be involved in it,” he said.
Air Chief Marshall’s statement seems to be aimed at the Nigerian government, which seems confused about whether to have dialogue with Boko Haram, or not, or how it should do it. Top government officials are studiously avoiding Borno State for fear of being assaulted, and it is a possibility that the military, as part of the Joint Task Force, are being asked to arrange or commence talks with the militants.
In recent times, there have been indications that government officials are being routinely duped by contractors and 419-ers who have found in the security crisis an avenue for duping the government of funds by claiming to be capable of setting up meetings with Boko Haram.
Following a categorical denial by Boko Haram that it is in talks with the government, the Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, issued a press statement on August 25 in which the government backed off its claims.
First, Dr. Abati said that the Boko Haram denial could not be believed because it had come only from one of its “factions.”
And then he admitted there was no dialogue in the normal sense.
"When government says it is already talking to Boko Haram, the form of that dialogue must be properly understood,” he said. “I think a lot of people are under the impression that the dialogue involves a situation whereby government officials are sitting on one side, Boko Haram persons are sitting on the other side in an air-conditioned room and there are negotiations across the table.”
With today’s statement by the Chief of Defence Staff, the process seems to have come full circle. Not only is the government not talking to the militants, the military seems to be saying that if the government wants to do so, it must do so itself and not expect soldiers who are trained only to shoot to do its talking and negotiating.

Kate 'Topless' Photos Shock Royal Couple As French Magazine Closer Plans Publication Of Photos Taken At Private Provence Getaway
A new royal privacy row is poised to break out after a French magazine claimed it would publish topless photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge today.
The magazine, Closer, said it had exclusive pictures of Kate topless on the terrace of a private chateau owned by the Queen's nephew Lord Linley.
Its website also showed an image of the front cover with the Duchess in a bikini apparently about to remove her top.
The pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge were taken with a long lens, at a private home
Speaking about the royal couple a source said: "They're saddened their privacy has been breached - if it has been breached."
The source stressed it could not confirm if the pictures were of Kate as they appeared to have been taken with a long lens and were pixellated.
The source added: "We will talk to our lawyers in London and counterparts in Paris to see what options are available."
He went on to say: "We're not aware of anyone (in the UK) seeking to publish so the Press Complaints Commission is not coming into it."
The BBC's royal reporter Nicholas Witchell said it appeared British newspapers were offered the alleged photographs of the couple last week, but turned them down.
Closer magazine published a preview of the pixellated photos on its website
The pictures were allegedly taken while Kate was on holiday with her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, in France last week.
The couple were staying at the Provence chateau, ahead of their current Diamond Jubilee tour of south-east Asia and the South Pacific on behalf of the Queen.
The publication would restart the row over privacy which raged around Prince Harry last month, when embarrassing images emerged of him frolicking naked in a Las Vegas hotel.
The Sun was the only British newspaper to defy a Press Complaints Commission advisory note not to publish photos of Harry in the nude with an unnamed woman.
The Mail said that the pictures of the Duchess were clearly taken on private property using cameras with extremely long lenses, which means no British newspaper would publish them.
It said the timing of publication could not be worse, with the Cambridges almost midway though a hugely successful tour on behalf of the Queen to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.
They arrived in Singapore on Tuesday and are currently in Malaysia before travelling on to Borneo then the South Pacific.
The Duchess of Cambridge visited the Assyakirin Mosque in Kuala Lumpur, wearing a headscarf and removing her shoes
Malaysia is a largely Muslim country with laws on public decency which makes the timing of the photos even more difficult.
At the Assyakirin Mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Friday the couple arrived to find two seats waiting for them at the bottom of marble steps, leading up to the domed place of worship, so they could take off their shoes.
Kate wore a grey dress by Eulah London with a matching headscarf and in keeping with Islamic custom when visiting a mosque, her outfit had sleeves and the hem of the gown was below the knee.
The Duchess's nude LK Bennett heels slipped off easily to reveal stockinged feet, while the Duke had on black socks.
At the top of the steps they were greeted by the Imam of the mosque Ustaz Saiful, director of Islamic religious department Datuk Che Mat Bin Che Ali, chairman of the mosque Syed Abdullah, general manager of facilities Shausudin Ishak and head division development manager Datin Faudziah Ibrahim.
In front of them were row after row of pillars and the party strode through the one-and-a-half acre site built in 1997 which can cater for up to 12,000 worshippers at the height of Friday prayers, with space for a further 3,000 in the grounds.
As they were guided into the large space, William asked "So is this where everyone gathers? When is your biggest service? How many people gather here?" When he was told as up to 12,000 on Fridays, he exclaimed: "Wow. So many."
The Duchess, whose scarf matched her outfit and framed her face, was deep in discussion with the development manager with the royal telling her "It's so peaceful in here", adding: "It's really amazing."
When she mentioned she had been to Edinburgh University for her degree and masters, Kate said: "Oh wow, really? Well it's very cold there compared to here," and the two both covered their mouths giggling.
In front of them were five men sitting crossed-legged on the floor chanting passages from the Koran, which was help open on small tables in front of them.
The royals looked up at a dome above them which was decorated with writings from the Koran and through the windows of the roof could be seen the looming Petronas towers, Kuala Lumpur's famous landmark.
Before leaving the royals stopped to watch three men performing their ablutions - washing face, ears, hands and feet - that must be performed before prayers can be made.
The trio were bent over running taps oblivious to the royals watching them complete the ritual.
The royal couple sat down at their starting point to replace their footwear and William handed Kate her shoes before tying his laces, and the Duchess joked with her partner telling him "mine are easy".
Later on Friday, the royal couple will experience the full diversity of Malaysian life when an outdoor extravaganza is staged in their honour.
They will enjoy a cultural fair of music and dance, in the capital Kuala Lumpur, reflecting all aspects of the Commonwealth country's heritage.
Later, at a lunch given by the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, trade links between the two nations will be highlighted by the Duke when he gives a speech to the assembled businessmen and women.
He is expected to underline the importance of the relationship both for British and Malaysian prosperity and for cultural ties between the two nations.
During the day, William and Kate will also enjoy a Diamond Jubilee tea party hosted by Simon Featherstone, the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, and his wife Gail at their residence.
At the end of the day, the royal couple will leave mainland Malaysia and fly to Kota Kinabalu, capital of the state of Sabah on Borneo, from which they will travel into the rainforest jungle tomorrow to explore the habitat.

...NNPC: Diezani’s Convoy Did Not Kill Newspaperman-PM News, Lagos
The Acting Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC Mr. Fidel Pepple has described as untrue reports that the convoy of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke was involved in a deadly car crash which killed Mr. James Momoh, a staff of the Nigerian Pilot Newspaper in Abuja.
Mr. Pepple however confirmed that a shuttle vehicle belonging to the Corporation was involved in an accident which eventually led to the death of the Pilot Newspaper staff.
“I want to state categorically that the unfortunate event of last night has nothing to do with the convoy of the Honourable Minister as speculated.
The accident involved one of our shuttle buses which regrettably knocked down a pedestrian in the Mabushi area of Abuja and was immediately rushed to the NNPC Medical Centre for attention. But sadly the young man gave up the ghost,’’ he said.
The NNPC spokesman stated that the Minister’s convoy was not involved in the crash in any way noting that the vehicle in question is not part of the minister’s pilot vehicles.
He said the Management of the NNPC has taken steps to meet with the family of the deceased as well as the Management of Pilot Newspapers
Muslims In Jos Protest Film That Purportedly Blasphemed Prophet Mohammed
A group of Muslims in the troubled tin city of Jos, Plateau State, yesterday evening held a demonstration over an America-produced film that purportedly blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.
The protesters, who defied security agents, said they would rather die than to watch their Prophet insulted, and will submit only to the laws of Allah which, to them, are supreme to any other law.
The mostly youth and children protesters, who numbered almost 100 were led by one Malam Mansur Sani Adamu in the demonstration, which took place on Bauchi Road. They carried placards condemning the United States, Israel, Denmark and Holland, accusing them of plotting against Islam and Muslims. Before they dispersed, they chanted, “Allahuakubar, Allahuakubar, they have touched our Prophet....”
Malam Adamu said, “We are doing this to express our anger against enemies of Allah and Islam led by America and her allies like Israel, Denmark and Holland because they are plotting against Islam. These days they have also produced another depicting film; this is what is troubling us.
This denigration of Prophet Muhammad is very sad and we are against it. With this it is better that it is death that consumed us for our Prophet to be denigrated. All Muslims in the world should come out and protest and those who cannot should pray.”
According to our source, security agencies urged the protesters to disperse since they had not secured permission, to which leader of the demonstration responded, “If our Prophet is blasphemed we will not wait for any law, Islam supersede any laws of the country.”
